Simple Homemade Sugar Donuts
About This Recipe
These homemade sugar donuts are delightfully soft on the inside and golden crisp on the outside. No fancy equipment needed—just basic pantry ingredients and a deep pan for frying. Coat them generously in sugar for that nostalgic donut shop flavor.
Feel free to serve them fresh or store in an airtight container for up to two days. They're especially delicious with coffee or milk!
Instructions
Activate the yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Mix the dough
In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and half of the flour. Mix until combined, then gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead and rise
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Cut out the donuts
Roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter (or two round cutters) to cut out donut shapes. Place on a floured tray and let rest for 15 minutes.
Heat the oil
In a deep pot, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches for 1–2 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Coat in sugar
While still warm, toss the donuts in granulated sugar until evenly coated. Serve immediately.
